Introduction
Abhyuday is an educational initiative established by DC aimed at facilitating the integration of social, emotional, and life skills curricula within school settings.
The program comprehensively supports every facet of this integration process, encompassing curriculum development, educator training, monitoring and evaluation of curriculum implementation, as well as regular quality assurance assessments to gauge the effectiveness of this integration on both the academic progress and well-being of students.
Background
Project Abhyuday was established in 2023 through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Department of School Education in Uttarakhand to incorporate Social Emotional Learning (SEL) into the curricula of government schools in Uttarakhand. In partnership with the Department of School Education and key stakeholders, our goal is to nurture the social and emotional well-being of students, thereby boosting their academic performance and personal growth.
Goals and Objectives
Project Abhyuday's mission is to transform the educational experience through:
- Increased awareness through social-emotional skills like self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and relationship building.
- Enhanced skills through engaging classroom activities, group discussions, and experiential learning exercises
- Capacity building of teachers to deliver the SEL curriculum, facilitating improved student outcomes effectively.
- Supportive learning environment fuelling future job satisfaction, empathy, and teacher-student relationships.
- Enhanced academic performance through a more positive outlook, allowing students to concentrate on their studies effectively.
- Identify other learning obstacles at schools and address them through improved infrastructure, teacher training and quality resources.
Implementation Strategy
Project Abhyuday follows a cyclic process that involves identifying classroom challenges, planning interventions, applying these interventions in classrooms, and evaluating the results to continuously improve our methods. This ensures an interactive and progressive learning environment for both students and educators.
It also emphasizes empowering government school teachers, recognising their profound impact on student's lives and society. Through collaboration with the government and partners, Abhyuday aims to establish a unified SEL vision to address social and emotional challenges in the state.

In Uttrakhand, we have divided the programme implementation into three stages.
In the short- term (1-2 years), DC will implement the program in all the blocks of Haridwar District. In the first year, we roll out the program on ground in one district and gather the feedback from all stakeholders to contextualize the program implementation and to improve the design. We will do a thorough evaluation of the program's impact and gather insights to inform the scaling strategy. We will use the learning and insights to adapt and refine the program for maximum effectiveness.
In the medium-term (2-3 years), using the first-year learning and bonding with the government, DC plans to expand the program to cover 6 districts out of 13 districts in Uttarakhand, including both Garhwal and Kumaon divisions. The program will use the learning from the first phase to enhance its scalability and impact. DC will also use a monitoring framework to track progress and address challenges effectively.
In the long-term (3-5 years): DC aims to scale the program in all 13 districts in Uttarakhand, reaching out to all the students, teachers, and government officials working in Uttarakhand Government schools. During this phase DC will focus on leveraging through learning and insights from ground to influence education policies at the state level. DC will also explore opportunities for replication of our model in other states or regions, contributing to broader educational improvements.
In 2024, we also expanded the project to Haryana, with the new goal of creating 'Happy and Joyful Classrooms.' This expansion includes new libraries and better sports facilities, supporting our mission to inspire and engage students in their educational paths.
